On 17th May, JBCE and BusinessEurope co-organised a breakfast meeting on the subject of the ongoing negotiations between the EU and Japan regarding a comprehensive and ambitious EPA/FTA. The respective Chief negotiators of both parties, Mr. Mauro Petriccione, Deputy Director-General, Directorate General for Trade, European Commission and H.E. Yoichi Suzuki, Ambassador for International Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, provided their views on the latest developments and results and answered a series of questions from the audience.

Participants were told that the negotiations have reached a crucial stage and that both sides were positive a good outcome was very probable in view of the strong political commitment of Prime Minster Abe and European Commission President Juncker.

Following the Chief negotiators’ presentations and an extensive Q&A, Mr Lars Bruckner, JBCE Vice-Chairman, highlighted in his concluding remarks the importance of a successful conclusion of the EU-Japan EPA/FTA negotiations from a number of perspectives, including the expected positive impact on future cooperation between the EU and Japan in crucial areas, such as international data flows, international standardization, as well as regulatory cooperation in general.
